The Tropical Fish Club of Burlington’s March guest, Ming Tam from Montreal will present his program on “South American Eartheaters”.
This presentation is a general overview of South American eartheaters comprising of eight genera: Acarichthys, Biotodoma, Geophagus, Gymnogeophagus, Mikrogeophagus, Satanoperca and Retroculus. In addition to discussing their distribution, habitats and general husbandry practices, we will take a closer look at species identification, differentiating the members of this diverse group of cichlids with relative ease.
Ming had the first taste of the aquarium hobby with paradise fish at the age of ten, and the hobby has since become an integral part of his life. Eartheaters became the primary focus about eight years ago, with pike cichlids and loricariids holding secondary places. Currently, Ming maintains ten aquaria of South American species. Outside of the hobby, he is a graduate student completing his PhD in synthetic and organometallic chemistry.
